Hajj And Its Significance In Islam

01 May 2019

It is every Muslim’s deep desire to perform Hajj once in their life. Hajj holds the utmost importance in every Muslim’s life as it is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is Fard on able-bodied Muslims to perform once in their life. It is performed once a year, unlike Umrah, which can be performed at any time throughout the year. The following Quran verse tells us about the significance of Makkah and Hajj:

“Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds. In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.”  [Holy Quran 3:96-97]

Although Hajj is only Fard on the able-bodied, its significance leads to sick people traveling from different countries to perform Hajj as well. Some people even walk for miles to perform Hajj. It is no surprise as every Muslim aspires to get the highest spiritual connection with the Almighty and get endless rewards no matter what the cost is.

Means & Measures Taken During Hajj

According to the Sharia, Hajj consists of five days. It usually starts from 8th to the 12th Zill Hajj. The key step to performing Hajj is to be in the state of Ihram, which is spiritually cleansing oneself with the blessings of the Almighty. Men usually wear a piece of white clothing whereas for women, it is not compulsory to wear white, however, they must not wear make-up or cover their faces throughout the pilgrimage. Stitched clothes are forbidden during the state of Ihram.

Hajj starts off with performing Tawaaf around the Kaaba followed by performing Sa’I between the hills of Al-Safa and Al-Marwa. The Muslims then spend their night in Mina, and then head to Mount Arafat. They later on climb the Jabal Al-Rahma after which they head towards Muzdalifa. They also collect stones for stoning the Devil in Mina.

The last three days include performing Tawaaf again, stoning the Devil and removing the Ihram. Men shave their head and women cut an inch or more of their hair at this stage.
